Funds raised support the Foundation’s mission to end the stigma around substance use disorder
The Jamie Daniels Foundation (JDF), an initiative of The Children’s Foundation, is pleased to announce that its second annual Celebrity Roast of the NHL’s winningest coach Scotty Bowman raised more than $250,000 in support from sponsors and donors. Proceeds will support the Foundation’s efforts to end the stigma associated with substance use disorder and provide the guidance and resources needed so that lives can be saved.
This year’s Roast, presented by Delta Dental, was televised and live streamed on October 14 via FOX Sports Detroit and later aired on the NHL Network. Appearances from Wayne Gretzky, Jack Nicklaus, JK Simmons, Jim Leyland, Dick Vitale and several of the Red Wings players who won Stanley Cups while being coached by Bowman created a night of laughter and entertainment.
The event also included an online silent auction featuring a variety of collectors’ items and one-of-a-kind experiences that raised more than $40,000.
Ken Daniels, lead announcer for the Detroit Red Wings, and Lisa Daniels-Goldman founded JDF in memory of their late son who struggled with substance use disorder.
“We’re thrilled with the outcome of our event. The Jamie Daniels Foundation was established to help raise awareness and funds for those battling substance use disorder, while dispelling the stigma that surrounds the issue,” shared Lisa Daniels-Goldman, JDF co-founder. “Having to pivot to a virtual event this year, we exceeded our expectations and couldn’t have done that without the continued support of our very generous sponsors and donors,” added Ken Daniels.
Together with The Children’s Foundation, JDF’s long-term goal is to build long-term safe affordable housing for those in recovery. Through a collaboration with the State of Michigan, this state-of-the-art approach creates a permanent supportive housing model. This apartment complex will utilize a holistic path to recovery, incorporating job training and financial literacy classes. JDF is looking forward to how this novel treatment method will promote health and wellness in the community.
“On behalf of The Children’s Foundation and as a proud Board Member of the Jamie Daniels Foundation, I am thankful for the success of this event especially considering the unusual circumstances we are facing,” said Lawrence J. Burns, President & CEO of The Children’s Foundation. “Those who supported the Roast have helped to create a tremendous impact on our community.”

About the Jamie Daniels Foundation
In 2018, Ken Daniels and Lisa Daniels-Goldman established the Jamie Daniels Foundation in honor of their late son, Jamie, who died from an overdose at the age of 23 while receiving treatment for a Substance Use Disorder. Despite the support of his family, Jamie’s life was tragically lost due to substandard care and the predatory practices that exist in the billion-dollar substance use recovery business. Their hope is to save others’ lives by providing education, resources, guidance and support to those struggling with substance use or know someone who is. The Children’s Foundation is dedicated to advancing the health and wellness of children and families. With an area of focus on mental health, The Children’s Foundation is collaborating with the Jamie Daniels Foundation to lead children and families on a path to a happier, healthier future.
